How to check a Wiener Städtische carrier liability policy
On a Wiener Städtische “Versicherungszertifikat / Certyfikat ubezpieczeniowy” (insurance certificate), read “Versicherungsnehmer / Ubezpieczający” (policyholder), “CMR-Polizze Nr.” (CMR policy no.) and “Für den Zeitraum / Za okres” (for the period). Cover applies only to plates in “Derzeit versicherte Fahrzeuge / Obecnie ubezpieczone pojazdy” (currently insured vehicles). The “ab / od” (from) and “bis / do” (until) columns can cut a vehicle out mid-year. There is no public number search: confirm the contract on wienerstaedtische.at/kontakt.
This is an independent Certica tutorial. It was not written or approved by Wiener Städtische. The document shown is not a live insurance policy.
What the document can confirm, and what it cannot
Check a Wiener Städtische policy in two stages. First read the “Versicherungszertifikat” (insurance certificate) and compare it with the booking. If the rate, the cargo or the file looks wrong, send a request through wienerstaedtische.at/kontakt. The right-hand column is Lutz Assekuranz, the broker, not the insurer.
The screenshots are a bilingual German and Polish Lutz / Wiener Städtische form. Match the printed labels. Each German or Polish field name in this walkthrough is followed by the English meaning in brackets.
OCP is the Polish label for carrier liability for goods in transit, also called CMR insurance or cargo liability. On this form the product is a “VERSICHERUNGSZERTIFIKAT / CERTYFIKAT UBEZPIECZENIOWY” (insurance certificate) for Haftung des Frachtführers (carrier liability) in Straßengüterverkehr (road haulage of goods). It is not vehicle MTPL. Check Polish plates in UFG. A company record in KRS or the Firmenbuch is not carrier verification.
What the first page of a Wiener Städtische policy looks like
Numbers 1 to 5 on the graphic are the “VERSICHERUNGSZERTIFIKAT / CERTYFIKAT UBEZPIECZENIOWY” (insurance certificate) title, the “Versicherungsnehmer / Ubezpieczający” (policyholder) block, “CMR-Polizze Nr.” (CMR policy no.) with the period, “Versicherungssumme je Schadenfall” (sum insured per claim) and the “Versicherer / Versicherungsmakler” (insurer / broker) pair. Step 6 is the vehicle list. Step 7 is confirmation outside the document. The printed labels are German and Polish. Each step quotes those words and gives the English meaning in brackets.

How to check a Wiener Städtische carrier liability policy step by step
Step 1. Subject of insurance
On the first page find the title “VERSICHERUNGSZERTIFIKAT” / “CERTYFIKAT UBEZPIECZENIOWY” (insurance certificate). This is a letter for the customer and for roadside checks, not the full “Polizze” (policy).
On the reverse read the sentence on “Haftung des Frachtführers” (carrier liability) in “Straßengüterverkehr” (road haulage of goods). It covers domestic hauls, international hauls (CMR / Polish carriage law) and cabotage in the EU or the EEA. A carrier-liability title in the email is not enough. This product is a Wiener Städtische CMR certificate issued by the broker.

Step 2. Insured party
Find “Versicherungsnehmer / Ubezpieczający” (policyholder). Compare the full legal name, legal form, address and NIP (Polish tax ID) with the booking and the current company record.
This form has no separate insured box. The contract party is the policyholder. A policy issued to another group company needs an explanation before loading.

Watch this
Base the decision on the name in the booking, not on the name in the email. Compare the NIP on the certificate with KRS or CEIDG.
Step 3. Policy number and period
Write down “CMR-Polizze Nr. / CMR-Polisa nr” (CMR policy no.) exactly as it stands in the row. This sample prints one obviously fake number.
Read “Für den Zeitraum / Za okres” (for the period). The dates must cover loading, the haul and the planned unloading. The date at the bottom of page 1 is the issue date of the certificate. That is not the “Beginn des Versicherungsschutzes” (start of cover) on the GüKG proof.
Step 4. Sum, territory and deductible
Read “Versicherungssumme je Schadenfall / Suma Ubezpieczenia na każdą szkodę” (sum insured per claim). That is one amount per event, not separate domestic and international rows. This form prints no deductible. Deductibles and cargo exclusions sit in the policy conditions, which the certificate does not reprint.
Territory sits on the reverse: domestic, CMR and cabotage in the European Union or the European Economic Area. The UK, Switzerland and Serbia are not in that sentence. Do not copy 1,000,000 EUR onto a haul outside the EU and EEA.

Step 5. Insurer and broker
At the bottom of page 1 read the left column “Versicherer / ubezpieczyciel” (insurer): WIENER STÄDTISCHE Versicherung AG, Schottenring 30, 1010 Wien.
The right column is “Versicherungsmakler / Broker ubezpieczeniowy” (insurance broker): Lutz Assekuranz. Lutz places the contract and issues the certificate. Wiener Städtische carries the risk. A phone number that appears only in the carrier’s email does not replace contact with the insurer.

Step 6. Vehicle list with ab / od and bis / do dates
Open “Derzeit versicherte Fahrzeuge / Obecnie ubezpieczone pojazdy” (currently insured vehicles). Cover applies only to those plates. Next to the plate stands the type: “ciągnik siodłowy” (tractor unit) = SZM, or LKW.
The columns “ab / od” (from) and “bis / do” (until) can be empty or can carry a date different from the policy period. On this form WWW 0001 joins on 15.03.2026 and WWW 0003 leaves on 30.06.2026. A booking plate missing from the list, or outside its own dates, is not covered by this certificate.

Step 7. Official confirmation
Wiener Städtische does not publish a public policy-number search. Open wienerstaedtische.at/kontakt. There is a form and a service hotline. Do not use a phone number that appears only in the carrier’s email.
The reverse confirms cover “zum Zeitpunkt der Ausstellung” (at the time of issue). Some certificates add that cover depends on full, timely premium. A December PDF does not prove the contract is alive on the loading day.
Limits most often missed on Wiener Städtische policies
The dates next to a plate are not the policy period
“Für den Zeitraum / Za okres” (for the period) covers the year. A vehicle can have its own “ab / od” (from) or “bis / do” (until). A January loading on a plate that starts on 15.03 is not covered.
Compare the booking plate with the list and with both date columns. An empty column means the policy period applies. A filled column cuts cover.

The certificate is a snapshot from the issue date
The reverse speaks of cover at the time this “Versicherungszertifikat” (insurance certificate) was issued. One wording says premiums have been paid so far. Another makes cover depend on payment after the invoice.
Compare the date at the bottom of page 1 with the loading date. An old December scan does not replace confirmation on the day of the haul.

The § 7 a GüKG proof is not vehicle MTPL
A third page is often “Nachweis gemäß § 7 a GüKG” (proof under section 7a of the German road-haulage act). It is for BALM and German roadside checks. It confirms HGB liability and an increase to 40 SZR/kg (SDR/kg) under § 449 HGB. That is still goods liability, not Kraftfahrt-Haftpflicht (motor vehicle liability).
“Beginn des Versicherungsschutzes” (start of cover) can be several years older than the year on the certificate. On this form 01.01.2020 next to a 2026 certificate. The insurer states it accepts no duty to third parties and need not notify changes or termination.

Cabotage is EU or EEA, not the world
The reverse lists “Kabotage in der Europäischen Union oder dem Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum” / “kabotaż w Unii Europejskiej lub Europejskiej Strefy Gospodarczej” (cabotage in the EU or the EEA).
UK cabotage, a Swiss haul or Serbia need a different wording. The single 1,000,000 EUR sum does not buy that.
Art. 29 (2) CMR is included, but inside the sum
The reverse includes “Haftung gemäß Art. 29 (2) CMR” (liability under Art. 29 (2) CMR, including gross negligence). That is wider than many Polish OCP forms, which exclude or sub-limit that article.
Payment still stops at “Versicherungssumme je Schadenfall” (sum insured per claim). Policy conditions, cargo exclusions and the deductible are not printed on the certificate. Read the certificate as a short form, not as the full wording.

Lutz Assekuranz is not the insurer
The right-hand column and the GüKG footer name Lutz Assekuranz Versicherungsvermittlung Ges.m.b.H. Lutz is the broker. The insurer is on the left: Wiener Städtische.
Send a live-contract check to wienerstaedtische.at/kontakt, not to an address from the carrier’s email.

How to decide after you have read the policy
| Check result | What it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Versicherungsnehmer, NIP, period, sum and the booking plate match, and the ab/od and bis/do dates cover the haul | The document fits the planned haul | Record the result and run the rest of the carrier checks |
| A different name in Versicherungsnehmer / Ubezpieczający | The certificate may belong to another company | Hold the decision and ask for the right document |
| The booking plate is missing from the list or falls outside ab/od and bis/do | Cover is limited to the listed vehicles and their dates | Ask for a current certificate with that plate, then confirm on wienerstaedtische.at |
| UK, Swiss or non-EU/EEA cabotage, and the reverse only names the EU or EEA | The certificate does not buy cabotage outside that wording | Look for a different territorial wording or a different document |
| You received only page 1, with no reverse and no plate list | The file is incomplete | Ask for the full Versicherungszertifikat with the reverse and use wienerstaedtische.at/kontakt |
What a PDF check does not confirm
How to read a Wiener Städtische Versicherungszertifikat is a different question from how to confirm that the contract is still live. Reading the file lets you judge the declared scope. It does not open the insurer’s current system.
- The PDF can be old, altered or incomplete.
- A signature and a logo do not, on their own, prove the file is genuine.
- On the GüKG proof the insurer states that the confirmation creates no duty to tell third parties about a change or an ending of cover.
- Carrier liability / CMR does not confirm vehicle MTPL, the licence or the company status.
- A final view on whether the cover is adequate may still need a broker, the insurer or a lawyer.
Keep this in mind
The PDF alone does not prove that the contract was not later changed, cancelled or cut back by an endorsement.
Don’t want to analyse every policy by hand?
Certica analyses the carrier liability policy you send, in any language. It reads the insured party, the period, the document type, territorial scopes, sums and named cargo categories.

FAQ
Can I check a Wiener Städtische carrier liability policy online by number?
No. Wiener Städtische does not publish a public search by number. Request a copy or the current terms through wienerstaedtische.at/kontakt.
Is a Wiener Städtische carrier liability policy the same as vehicle MTPL?
No. The Versicherungszertifikat covers carrier liability for goods (CMR / OCP). The § 7 a GüKG proof also covers goods and HGB, not Kraftfahrt-Haftpflicht (motor vehicle liability). Check vehicle MTPL separately. For Polish plates use UFG.
Where is the sum insured on a Wiener Städtische policy?
In the row “Versicherungssumme je Schadenfall / Suma Ubezpieczenia na każdą szkodę” (sum insured per claim). That is one amount per event. This certificate has no separate domestic and international sums.
Which Wiener Städtische dates should I compare with the booking?
“Für den Zeitraum / Za okres” (for the period) must cover the whole haul. Then check “ab / od” and “bis / do” next to the booking plate. “Beginn des Versicherungsschutzes” on the GüKG proof is the contract start, often older than the certificate year.
Does Wiener Städtische print a separate cabotage sum?
No. This certificate has no separate cabotage cell. Territory sits on the reverse: EU or EEA. Outside that wording, look for a different record.
How is Lutz Assekuranz different from Wiener Städtische on this form?
Lutz Assekuranz is the broker in the right-hand column. Wiener Städtische is the Versicherer (insurer) in the left-hand column and carries the risk. Send a live-contract check to the insurer.
Does the vehicle list limit a Wiener Städtische policy?
Yes. The reverse points to the Kennzeichen (licence plates) on page 1. A plate missing from the list, or outside its own ab / od and bis / do dates, is not covered by this certificate.
